Examples of how Vimeo can be used in other Classes

Mathematics

Vimeo can be used in mathematics classes to demonstrate real life scenarios for math concepts presented in class. Many students feel that what they learn in math, they will never use in real life, thus, providing visuals as to where these concepts can be implemented will show students the value of these concepts. In addition, Vimeo can be used in flipped classroom lessons. Teachers can film/use video tutorials on Vimeo that students can view at home. This can be especially useful if students are struggling with their work at home and need to review what was covered in the lesson.

Geography

Vimeo can be used in geography classes in many ways. Teachers can use Vimeo to show videos during lessons that relate to the subject content being discussed. They can show a video to the class and have the class reflect on the video by answering an opinion paper, critical thinking questions, having a class debate, etc. In addition, teachers can have students research their own videos on Vimeo relating to course content. Students can do this for an assignment with a written rationale supporting and explaining their chosen video. Our example lesson provides a way for teachers to implement Vimeo into their lessons. Using videos on Vimeo allow teachers to add a creative edge to their lessons to display the subject matter effectively. Also, using videos allow students to witness geographic issues all over the world. For instance, instead of lecturing to students about effects of climate change, teachers can provide students with the visual effects of climate change all over the world to allow them to truly witness these issues.

History

Much like geography, history courses are very Vimeo friendly. Vimeo can be used in the flipped classroom to give information to students ahead of class. By using the download feature students can also put Vimeo movies on their smartphones to watch at a later date. This could come in handy for students who wish to download the video for the next class and watch it on their way home from school. Students with a long commute can watch on their phone and it is readily accessible when they get home, if review is needed. Brining Vimeo into a classroom will result in more creative projects, as its upload process is easy and simple to follow. Students can upload historical reenactments videos and add effects and music to create a more professional looking video than ones produced for/on YouTube.

English

Again we see possibilities involving the flipped classroom, but in English there is more room for creative expression through various forms of media. Students can create videos for projects just like in other classes, but the media unit could also be explored in depth by using Vimeo. Many well known filmmakers post their work on Vimeo and this can go a long way in teaching media literacy by showing students different videos or having them watch videos on their own time and then critique them. Vimeo is so versatile that many cross-curricular activities can stem from using it.
